A new non-profit grocery store called Makin’ Groceries Store is coming soon to 319 East Pinhook Road in Lafayette. Led by Second Harvest Food Bank and supported by United Way of Acadiana, the project is focused on improving food access for residents of Lafayette’s Northside.
The store will be located in the 70501 zip code, an area identified by the USDA as a food desert. It’s designed to serve individuals and families who face barriers to accessing affordable, healthy food.

I created an Ai-generated version of the building to get an idea of how it could possibly look. Actual building may not resemble this.
Makin’ Groceries Store will offer a full range of grocery items, including fresh produce, pantry staples, and household goods. Shoppers will not need to present identification or proof of income, and the store will operate similarly to a traditional grocery store.
In addition to groceries, the store will provide support services such as nutrition education, SNAP and Medicaid enrollment, and housing assistance. Staff and volunteers will also provide food tastings, cooking demonstrations, and guidance on preparing healthy meals.

Another angle of the building
The store expands on the success of Second Harvest’s Makin’ Groceries Mobile Market, which brings fresh food directly to underserved neighborhoods. Volunteers will help operate the store and foster a welcoming environment for the community.
Second Harvest has served South Louisiana for over 40 years and currently supports more than 500 partners across 23 parishes. United Way of Acadiana’s involvement comes through the Lafayette Initiative for Food Equity, which funds projects that increase food access in local communities.
The Makin’ Groceries Store is tentatively scheduled to open later this year.
