The popular Shreveport, Louisiana-based chicken franchise, Southern Classic Chicken, is coming soon to Lafayette, Louisiana with its first Lafayette store set for 4603 Johnston Street & Lana Drive, formerly Moss Motors Select.
Southern Classic Chicken was founded by Leon Fanning, who opened his first fried chicken restaurant in 1976. He later collaborated with his brother Howard and his son Brandon to transform their business into Southern Classic Chicken in 1989. The concept focused on four pillars: quality, the best fried chicken, classic southern sides, and Cajun-seasoned fries, delivered through a simple drive-thru and walk-up model. The idea quickly became popular, and the company grew to 17 corporate locations in the Southern U.S. Today, it is a second-generation family-run franchise led by Alan (Howard’s son), Brandon, and Alex (Leon’s sons). The Fannings are still deeply involved in daily operations and are expanding into Lafayette and New Orleans, Louisiana while maintaining their original model and menu.
Their menu features combos like the Classic Combo with 2 pieces of chicken, a side, a roll, and a drink, and the Jumbo Combo with 3 pieces. They offer tender meals, family boxes, and various chicken and roll options. Sides include French fries, Cajun rice, cole slaw, mashed potatoes with gravy, red beans & rice, and sweet corn grit. Kids’ meals come with a leg, a wing, or 2 tenders with fries, a drink, and a roll. They also offer dipping sauces like classic, ranch, honey mustard, buffalo, BBQ, and white gravy.
The Lafayette franchise, owned and operated by Jessie and Amanda Fontenot and their son, Brody, has many locals on the edge of their seats waiting for more news to come out about Southern Classic Chicken after the company released news in 2021 of two franchised locations coming soon to Lafayette. We are excited to share that the property at Johnston & Lana Drive has been officially purchased and construction will begin soon as a permit has been issued to build.
