on

Lafayette Public Library has unveiled conceptual designs for its new Northeast Regional Library coming soon to 1508 Louisiana Avenue near the intersection of Carmel Drive in North Lafayette.

The conceptual plans were formally presented during last nights Lafayette Public Library System Board meeting, offering the public its first detailed look at the anticipated library project.

The new branch will be approximately 20,533 square feet and will be constructed on a 6.5-acre site neighboring the Holy Family Apartments & Holy Rosary.

According to conceptual plans, the branch is designed to house a collection ranging from 44,000 to 53,000 items. Features of the new branch will include a variety of indoor and outdoor amenities like dedicated children’s storytime and activity areas, teen spaces, STE(A)M learning areas, a high-tech maker space, study rooms, quiet reading areas, study window seats, interactive displays, a music garden, and 37 public computer stations.

“The new Northside Library is about so much more than a building. It’s about making a statement that every child, every family, and every neighborhood deserves access to spaces that inspire learning, creativity, and opportunity,” said Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet. “The design is beautiful, inviting, and uplifting, and reflects the character and pride of the Northside while creating a welcoming destination for generations to come.”

The Northeast Regional Library has been in discussion for several years as part of efforts to expand library services in North Lafayette. The project was previously proposed for a site near Shadow Bluff Drive before plans shifted to the current location along Louisiana Avenue near Carmel Drive as a more accessible location.

Outdoor amenities will include walking paths and additional gathering areas for the surrounding community.

Additional details, including construction timelines, are expected to be released as the project progresses.
