The Meltdown Snoballs Coming Soon to Former Burger King on Johnston St.

on

The Meltdown Snoballs, a fast-growing Louisiana snoball company, is preparing to open its first Lafayette location at 1500 Johnston Street. The new spot will include a dine-in area, outdoor seating, and a drive-thru, operating year-round.

The 2,800-square-foot building is currently being renovated to house the business. The site was formerly home to Burger King, which closed in early 2024. Its position near the University of Louisiana campus makes it a central and high-traffic location for the new concept.

Founded in Baton Rouge in 2021 by then-16-year-old Zein Clayton, The Meltdown has grown quickly over the past four years. The company now operates five brick-and-mortar locations in Baton Rouge, Brusly, and New Roads, along with two food trucks called the Meltmobiles.

“From day one, I made it clear we have the best snoballs in Louisiana, and we proved it when we won the Louisiana ‘Battle of the Best Snoballs’ just four months after opening,” said Clayton. “Now, at 20 years old, I’m proud to say The Meltdown is becoming Louisiana’s biggest snoball company.”

While snoballs are the focus, the menu also features hot sausage po’boy nachos, Frito pies, and chili dogs topped with house-made chili and cheese. The Lafayette shop will carry the same lineup offered at other locations.

Clayton says Lafayette was chosen for expansion because of its strong food culture and welcoming community. “Lafayette has a deep tradition of food and hospitality, and our brand fits right into that culture,” he said. “This city is also in a prime spot for growth, which makes it the perfect place to continue expanding The Meltdown.”

The Lafayette project carries special meaning as well. Clayton credited realtor Camille Hensarling with helping secure the lease before her recent untimely passing. “Camille supported me every step of the way, and I know she would be proud to see the outcome of Meltdown Lafayette,” he said. Local real estate agent Paul Arcenaux provided additional assistance for the new location.

The new Johnston Street location is expected to open in late October or early November.
