Sugar Du Jour, a local small‑batch bakery known for sweet dough pies, cake squares, cookies and seasonal desserts, will open its first retail location at 415 Lee Avenue in downtown Lafayette.
The new shop, located near Parc Sans Souci and within the heart of the downtown business district, will serve freshly baked goods daily to walk‑in customers and those placing custom orders.
“I began baking at just three years old beside my grandmother, Ruby Phillips, and I’ve continued baking ever since.”
After more than 17 years as a teacher, the local owner, Heather Steven, eventually turned that lifelong passion for baking into a business. What began as a home-based operation grew steadily through word-of-mouth, ultimately leading to the decision to open Sugar du Jour’s first dedicated storefront.
“Those early memories in my grandmother’s kitchen taught me that baking is about more than ingredients—it’s about love, connection, comfort, and joy.”

Sugar Du Jour’s menu at opening will include signature sweet dough pies, rich cake squares, brownies, cookies and rotating seasonal items. In addition, the bakery will offer new breakfast‑style pastries, including made‑from‑scratch biscuits, cinnamon rolls and croissants. Custom cakes for events will also be available.
“While Sugar Du Jour is now preparing to open its first storefront, the heart of this business has been in the making for more than forty years,” said Steven. “Being downtown allows us to serve more people, collaborate with neighboring businesses, and be part of the exciting growth happening in the heart of Lafayette.”
The downtown location was chosen for its community atmosphere, access to foot traffic and proximity to other local businesses. The space is designed to be welcoming and comfortable for daily visits, quick stops or special orders.
Sugar Du Jour is set to open this Saturday, December 20th, 2025.
