Earlier this year, we reported that the former Burger Tyme—originally a Wendy’s—at 3300 Johnston Street would be demolished and replaced with a new Starbucks.

The new Starbucks building has been fully constructed from the outside. The shell is complete, the site is landscaped, and the exterior structure is finished. However, the interior remains untouched with no sheetrock or build-out work yet completed, and there is still no exterior Starbucks signage installed. In fact, the Burger Tyme monument sign sits pretty with fresh landscaping around it. Though, once Starbucks signage comes through, that will be swapped.
In recent months, many of our followers have noticed that visible construction activity appeared to stall, leading some to speculate that Starbucks may have backed out of the project. That is not the case. According to the City of Lafayette permitting office, this particular development is following there own two-stage permitting process initiated by Starbucks—not the City. The first permit covered the exterior shell aka White Box, which has been done for a while. The second permit, which covers the full interior build-out, has recently been filed.
There may have been specific procedural steps required for this project that are not publicly detailed, which could explain the gap between exterior completion and the next phase moving forward. It’s also possible that the exterior phase required a certificate of occupancy before the interior permit could advance. However, we have not noticed any new COs come through yet for this project to indicate that scenario.
With the interior build-out permit now in place, Starbucks is expected to begin the next phase of construction soon.
No official opening date has been provided.
