A new Sicilian-Italian restaurant, CuGino, is coming soon to 117 South College Road in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Behind the concept are seasoned restaurateurs Gene Todaro, known locally for founding Marcello’s, and Hunter Moody, a Lafayette native and longtime operator in the Baton Rouge restaurant scene.

The name CuGino—Italian for “cousin”—offers more than just a nod to heritage. “It’s a play on my name,” Gene explains. “In Sicily, Cu means ‘with,’ so at CuGino, you’re dining with Gino.”

Born and raised in Sicily, Gene brings his roots directly into the kitchen. “My mother cooked every day, and I’d go to the market for her. That’s where I learned to taste, to understand ingredients,” he recalls. His culinary journey began early and eventually led him to Lafayette, where he co-founded Marcello’s in 1981, later reviving it in 2007 before selling it in 2021 to the group who owns Social and Charley G’s.

Co-founder Hunter Moody grew up in the restaurant industry. His family introduced Outback Steakhouse to Louisiana in the 1990s, and he went on to spend more than a decade operating Sonny’s BBQ in Baton Rouge. “Opening an upscale restaurant in my hometown has always been my dream,” he says.

CuGino will offer rustic Italian cuisine with distinct Sicilian influences. Guests can expect classic dishes like lasagna, chicken parmesan, and a variety of veal specialties, alongside hand-cut steaks and fresh seafood selections. “Our meatballs follow a true Sicilian recipe—completely original, even more so than most,” Gene shares. With Head Chef Mal Tossell leading the kitchen—alongside seasoned staff who previously worked with Gene and Hunter—CuGino is positioned to execute at a high level. Beyond the food, guests can expect an exquisite wine list and thoughtfully crafted cocktails.

The building itself is undergoing a complete renovation and transformation, including a new private dining room. Inside, guests will find Venetian plaster walls, rustic string lights, and a climate-controlled glass wine display. CuGino will also feature its own branded Sicilian olive oil, hand-selected by the founders.

CuGino is slated to open in October 2025.
