W.D. & Mary Baker Smith Career Center(k-12), located at 200 18th Street in Lafayette, is in the latter portion of a major technology upgrade & renovation. The school does allow for other area school students to take classes.
The Lafayette Parish School System(LPSS) has dedicated significant financial and human capital towards building the premier hub for STEM innovation in the State of Louisiana. That investment, over the span of 18 months, has led to new computers for design & manufacturing, a robotics & programming lab, a modern machine lab with all-new CNC Mills & CNC Routers, a 3-D printing lab with four Lulzbot 3D printers that—ironically—was 3D printed themselves.
— Side note: UL doesn’t even have some of this more modern equipment, according to school officials.
This significant investment has even positioned W.D. & Mary Baker Smith Career Center as the premier manufacturing and robotics facility in the state of Louisiana. But wait, there’s more! The center is also home to the states only permanent First Robotics Competition field.
Such a big leap into technology for the school has prompted the requirement for the first ever robotics competition that is to be held Saturday, December 1st, at 9:00 a.m. at the W.D. & Mary Baker Smith Career Center. Admission is free to the public and concessions will be available.
This development is beyond just a structure, but a building of young minds that is so needed to propel & inspire Louisiana’s emerging talent.
